Rice University commissioned Nate Padavick to create
an illustrated map that depicts the university and its institutional partners in the healthcare arena.
What were the illustration project goals?
The goal of the map was to emphasize the university’s proximity to the excellent hospitals and healthcare institutions that make up the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
How was this project realized?
This project manifested on a full-page spread that accompanied a story about Houston’s healthcare excellence in Rice University’s quarterly magazine.
What was Nate’s creative process?
In this particular project, the step that required the most creativity was visually summarizing each institution in a recognizable and iconic form. As many of the these institutions are large complexes, Nate researched online to find the characteristics of each site that would register most quickly by viewers
What materials were used in the creation of this map illustration?
This map was created in Adobe Illustrator by Nate Padavick, using digital brushes and his hand-drawn font Tallboy. AI was not used in the creation of this illustration.
